Srinagar Women’s College, Zakura, established in 2008, is a distinguished institution dedicated to empowering women through education. Initially functioning from the library block of Amar Singh College as a makeshift arrangement, it was relocated to its permanent campus at Batpora, Zakura in 2019. Situated at the foothills of the Zabarwan mountain range and alongside the iconic Dal Lake, the college offers a serene and inspiring environment for academic pursuits. Affiliated with the University of Kashmir and recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the college received a “B+” accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in November 2022.
The college has adopted the National Education Policy (NEP-2020) and provides a diverse array of programs across Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. Strategically located near premier institutions such as the University of Kashmir, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), and the Central University of Kashmir, it enjoys an academic edge over many colleges in the valley. It caters to a broad catchment area, reaching urban and rural populations, including distant regions like Fakir Gujri, Khimber, and Shuhama, as well as neighboring districts Ganderbal and Bandipora.
A key focus of the college is to serve marginalized communities, many of whom are first-generation learners. It is also a critical educational option for girls from conservative families, often overcoming significant societal barriers to education. As the only pure women’s college in northern Kashmir, it provides a vital platform for young women, aptly described as “a ray of hope for dwellers of darkness.”
The college was renamed in 2021 after Shri Akhtar Mohi-Ud-Din, a renowned Kashmiri writer and novelist, in recognition of his contribution to modern Kashmiri literature and his connection to the locality. Its logo, symbolizing the transformative power of education, equates knowledge with light, emphasizing how learning enables individuals to distinguish between truth and falsehood, right and wrong, and virtue and vice. Srinagar Women’s College, Zakura, continues to inspire and empower women, shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for the region.
